Respect for disagreement and proper tone at the universities

Published online: 15.11.2023

Annoncement from the management at Aalborg University.

The unfortunate war in the Middle East affects everyone deeply. This can both be seen and felt at the Danish universities. In recent days and weeks, notice boards at a number of universities have been used to send political messages addressing the conflict.

There are strong emotions at stake and everyone has the right to express themselves within the law. But everyone also has a responsibility to maintain proper tone and behaviour at the universities. Also when discussing difficult topics.

We reject harassment, intimidation and threats against others we disagree with. It must be safe to study and work at the university. Even for those we disagree with. We reject any form of anti-Semitism and other hate speech that expresses contempt for individuals or groups, for example based on faith, ethnicity or national background.

At the same time, we uphold freedom of expression and the individual's right to use it. In Denmark, freedom of expression is a fundamental right. This also means that as students or staff at a university you may risk being confronted with views, images or graphic material that may seem offensive. We expect respect for everyone's right to express themselves ĘC as long as it is done within the law.

Although we may disagree, we insist on respectful behaviour and a proper tone at the university. If you experience harassment, intimidation and threats or the like, we encourage you to contact management.?
